Best Things to Do in Castlegar
We’ve lived in Castlegar and found that the best things to do are really in the adventures you create yourself. Here’s where to start!
Dove Hill: Castlegar’s Most Iconic Viewpoint

Finding a trail to explore in Castlegar is easy! From iconic hikes like Dove Hill to the Brilliant Suspension Bridge and Doukhobour Waterline Trail, there’s plenty to choose from for people of all skill levels.
Our favourite hikes are the kind that fit in an afternoon and can be done with the whole family. If you love hiking, you should check out our article on hikes and outdoor activities in Castlegar.
Castlegar also has an impressive selection of easily accessible waterfalls. Hop in the car and you’ll find most of these are only 5-20 minutes down the trail, with some truly inspiring waterfalls as a reward for exploring!
Start with nearby options like Little McPhee Falls by the Brilliant Suspension Bridge, and work your way out to Syringa Park for natural waterslides and evergreen forests as you explore all of Castlegar’s stunning waterfalls.

Spend the Day at Millennium Park & Ponds
Millennium Park is probably the easiest place to recommend if you’re wondering what to do in Castlegar.
The riverside park has swimming ponds, beach areas, walking paths, a large playground, sports facilities and a purpose-built bike park. It’s the kind of place where everyone in the family can find something to do.
The playground is great for older kids, as it’s really quite an impressive structure. Kids 6-12 will have an absolute blast here, although little kids will find plenty to enjoy too, even if the main structure proves too imposing.
Pack a picnic, bring the swimsuits and plan to spend a few hours here.
Our tip: Don’t just think of Millennium Park as a swimming spot. The combination of the riverfront, playground, bike park and walking paths makes it a great place to spend an entire afternoon, for all ages from toddlers to grandparents!

Explore Zuckerberg Island
Zuckerberg Island Park is one of Castlegar’s more unusual attractions, and totally worth a stop.
Located in the Columbia River near downtown, this small island is the perfect place for a casual walk with both obvious and hidden history to discover.
While we miss the pit house mock-up that greeted visitors in years past, you’ll find several large impressions that mark the location of a collection of indigenous homes from Castlegar’s history – an uncommon marker of pre-colonial life in the West Kootenay.
There’s also a very unique doukhobor-era building here, the home of the island’s namesake, Alexander Zuckerberg. Now a museum, it makes the whole island a very unique glimpse into Castlegar’s past.
It’s also easy to combine with other downtown Castlegar stops, making it a great addition to a day-trip itinerary. Read more about it here.
Walk the Castlegar Sculpturewalk
Sculpturewalk turns Castlegar into an outdoor art gallery, with sculptures installed all throughout the community, from downtown all the way to the city limits at Robson and Blueberry.
It’s free, easy to explore at your own pace, and makes for a nice change of scenery if you’ve already spent the morning hiking, swimming or driving.
Grab a coffee, wander through downtown and see how many sculptures you can find.

Learn About Doukhobor History
Doukhobor Discovery Centre is one of the best places to understand the history behind this fascinating part of Castlegar’s history.
The museum recreates aspects of Doukhobor life in Kootenays, with historic buildings, artifacts and exhibits that help tell the story of one of the groups that played such an important role in the development of the region, from Slocan Valley to Grand Forks.
If you’re interested in local history, this is one Castlegar stop that’s worth making time for. You can also often catch a performance by the doukhobor choir at the Brilliant Cultural Centre, which hosts all sorts of community and cultural events in this doukhobor community gathering place.
Visit the Historic Railway Station
Castlegar’s history is also closely tied to the railway.
The Castlegar Station Museum occupies the community’s historic CPR station and houses artifacts and memorabilia connected to the region’s railway and local history.
It’s a smaller attraction, but an interesting one if you’re curious about how Castlegar grew from a railway community into the regional hub it is today.

Go to the Beach
Castlegar doesn’t really have a central swimming area like Nelson’s Lakeside Park, but the area is surrounded by incredible swimming holes, such as Nancy Green lake (pictured above).
The best swimming spots in the Castlegar area are all 10-30 minutes away, but if you fancy a quick dip in town you can always swim right in the Columbia River at Millennium Park.
You can explore our favourite swimming spots in our article on the Best Beaches in and Around Castlegar BC.
