With its vibrant café culture, Nelson has earned a reputation as a destination for coffee enthusiasts. The town has a coffee shop on every corner, each putting its spin on this storied institution with a cool atmosphere and their own blend of caffeinated goodness. While many excellent coffee shops are conveniently located downtown, there are a few hidden gems worth venturing beyond the city centre.

Whether you’re a seasoned coffee connoisseur or simply looking for a caffeine boost, Nelson’s coffee shops offer a variety of options to fit whatever vibe you’re looking for. From cozy, intimate spaces to bustling hangouts, there’s a coffee shop for everyone.

Today we’re focusing on three of Nelson’s longstanding and fan-favourite coffee shops. You won’t want to miss these if you’re planning a visit to Nelson (and this is where we take out of town guests to too), so grab your favourite reusable mug and let’s go find a pick-me-up.

Oso Negro

The original Nelson coffee hotspot, Oso Negro remains a Nelson landmark popular in both Summer and Winter. It’s the only place in town where you can order an incredible heartwarming coffee, tea, or chai latte and enjoy it in a meticulously landscaped private garden, and you don’t even have to leave downtown to do it! A true gem đź’Ž and an irreplaceable institution.

One of the coffee shops that opens earliest in Nelson, Empire has earned its spot on the caffeine podium with its cozy, private vibe, and array of delicious food (especially the muffins, which are as good as they come!). It’s got a lovely sunlit atrium and a more moody and introspective main shop interior, depending on how you’re feeling.

L&C Bakery

Part high fashion mid century, part leafy green, rustic timber decor, L&C French Bakery & Cafe is a one-of-a-kind addition to Nelson. This is the place to come for a buttery soft croissant with a flaky, crunchy shell that’s filled with rich and creamy chocolate. It’s also the place to come for a superb latte or a warm-up after a drizzly walk at Lakeside Park, or a hot chocolate on a frosty Winter morning.

There’s certainly more where that came from (for example the new satellite location of Empire Coffee down at The Prestige Resort and Hotel). You’ll no doubt have a favourite by the end of your trip, but these three quintessential Nelson cafes continue to be favourites after many years.

Once you’re ready to go about the rest of your day, check out this list of viewpoints, parks, and other outdoor activities, and if you’re looking for a place to have dinner, you’ll love your experience at one of these iconic Nelson restaurants.
